Rito Sereno BMW R100 race replica

Three years ago, Ritmo Sereno of Tokyo produced a stunning orange BMW R80 track bike—the highly successful ‘Nakajima’ racer. Now a Ritmo customer has commissioned a road-going version—and this is it. It’s based on a 1991 R100 RS, but many of the other details are close to the track machine. The suspension is Öhlins front and back, the brake system is from Brembo and carburetion is Keihin FCR. Ritmo has paid a lot of attention to weight, so the 230kg-or-so of the stock machine has been reduced to a gossamer 175kg. (The battery holder, oil catch tank and the frame from the engine backwards are handmade in lightweight aluminium alloy.) Power is now around 80bhp at the back wheel, helped by a custom-made 2-into-1 exhaust system routed through a modified center stand. Ritmo has documented the entire build on its website—the link is here (via Google Translate). The level of craftsmanship is extraordinary, but if the authentic orange paint job is a little too garish for you, check out the original and (equally illustrious) Nakajima racer, a lovely blue R90/6. Is there a better custom BMW builder in the world today?

Chicken Salad by LC Fabrications

Jeremy Cupp of LC Fabrications has a truly original style when it comes to customization. However, he is known as custom bike builder who works with Harleys and Triumphs, but somehow a Yamaha made its way to his garage. The story begins with Bruce, a really nice guy who has it all: big black trucks, sweet little roadsters and all the fine women. Bruce, picked up a ’79 XS650 with only 11K on its 31 year old odometer but the bike sat for over a year in his garage. One day Bruce decided to donate this f-n Yamaha to the cause and this and where Cupp and the chicken shit (the f-n Yamaha) met.

Cupp had other things to take care at that time, but the bug was in his mind: the XS650 was only half finished and it was just sitting around, with some really cool ideas. He than decided to screw the Panster project and began his work on the Yamaha exploring the possibilities. The result? A beautiful and compact tracker-style custom with hard-tail back end and a cantilevered seat. The motor received some attention too, it was boosted with a 750 cylinder kit, 36mm Mikuni round slide carburetion and mild porting. Yes, Cupp can make chicken salad out of chicken shit.

Zaeta Short Track fun

Since my last post about the Dominator NX650 based dirtbike, I just can’t get my head around Short Track bikes. I know it’s not a scoop, but the Italian Zaeta company jumped really in the middle of the Short Track business. The bike they realized belongs to the father of Valentino, Graziano Rossi, big fan of drifting.
The engine is a 450cc Yamaha bored over to 480cc by Yamaha Rinaldi Racing, mounted on a J&M Short Track specific frame.
Compact and lightweight, 101 kilograms for 70 HP, pure fun.
Thanks for the dream guys.

Honda Dominator NX650 – The retro dirtbike

Andrew Greenland bought his 1992 Honda Dominator NX650 for £300, with the intention of just restoring it as a winter project.
“I thought I would maybe change a few bits and bobs,” he says. “One night, when the bike was stripped down to the rolling chassis, I placed a Honda CG125 (1976) tank on it for a laugh-and that was it! Retro dirtbike was the theme.”
Greenland cut the rear subframe uprights down by three inches and added a loop at the back, leaving the rest of the structure original. He rebuilt the motor with a bigger bore and piston and new valves and guides, and swapped out the stock 21” front wheel for a 19” Honda SLR650 wheel. The exhaust system came from Jemco in Texas, with Trail Tech supplying the headlight and speedometer. Greenland then built a new tail unit using fiberglass and did all the painting himself with rattle tins. The project took six months, and the bike rolled out of the shed a few days ago-owing Greenland less than £2,000 in total build costs. “I’ve been tinkering with my own bikes since I was 12,” says Greenland, “but I’ve never altered a bike from its original form before and it was a pain in the ass! But when I go out on it, and see the looks it gets, it makes it all worth it.” Home building at its best, don’t you think?

The Wrenchmonkees are back – Ducati 750SS Custom

Modified seat and rear frame, custom tank, fiberglass rear end, Tarozzi clipons, small front fender. New headlight and turn signals, WM Megatron muffler. It’s a light bike – weighing only 160kg or 350lbs – and with 70hp on tap it’ll be pretty quick. Great job.

Jeff Decker’s Vincent Black Lightning

Classic. Beautiful. Desirable. These are the words to describe the Vincent Black Lightning motorcycle prodiced by the British manufacturer Vincent Motorcycles, a firm that lived 27 years from 1928 till 1955. They had the world’s fastest production motorcycle in 1948 with the launch of the Black Shadow. The Black Lightning is one rare motorcycle nowadays, and Jeff Decker, a Bronze Artist is a proud owner of one customized Black Lightning.

Jeff says: “The bike is based on a HVG (Harris Vincent Gallery) Chassis. Herb set me up with all the juiciest left overs he had from Rollie Free & Marty Dickerson. I took a perfectly built motor with all the rarest goodies, spine, ‘48 forks & tail section & spent a few hundreds of hours more with my uncle Curtis creating/ finishing/customizing this bike.”

David’s bike from Toulouse

Meanwhile the engine is an Evolution 2 cosmeticly improved, looking like a Panhead. Front brake is a smart cover of a disk brake looking like a vintage drum brake. The back tyre has been replaced by an Avon Drag slick since these pictures were done, so was the handle bar which is now a flat bar. David wants his machine to be in constant evolution.

Glorious BMW r75/6

takehome2takehome1bmw_side2wbmw_rt_rear2walumitail_partI found sparkymoto’s rebuild story on this forum. It’s a pretty good job, based on a r75/6. The home-made swing arm is gorgeous, the footpegs are great. A good example off a sane “do it yourself” customizing.
